How to survive your first day in your new job: 6 tips

So, you got the job! After weeks and months of applications and interviews, you have finally sealed the deal. As you look forward to this new phase in your career with enthusiasm, reality soon sinks in to replace the excitement with nervousness as you get closer to your first day on the job. It is natural to have first-day nerves. After all, you are walking into the unknown. But do not worry! We have got your back.

To help you start your first day on the job with confidence, we have put together a few sure-fire tips.

Tips to help you survive your first day at a new job

1.      Begin with a positive mindset.

Rule number one – begin the day with a positive mindset. Now is not the time to lose yourself amongst the flurry of doubts floating in your mind. Give the doubts a boot, and remember why they hired you. From the long list of candidates, they chose you – why? Because you have the skills they need.

2.      Prepare ahead of time.

Help yourself by removing the added stress of worrying about how you will get to work by preparing ahead of time. If you need to take public transport, check the schedule, and do a trial run of the route. The same goes for if you will be driving. Do a trial run to determine how long it will take for you to reach your destination.

3.      Arrive early

When preparing, you will want to factor in arriving fifteen minutes early on your first day. By doing so, you will get in on time (should there be any delays), and it will show how eager you are to get started; plus create a good first impression – which is our next point.

4.      Make a good first impression.

Simply arriving on time is not enough to create a good lasting impression. You need to put forward your best version. By this, we mean carefully considering what you wear on the first day. Your clothes should be well-fitted, professional, and in accordance with the company’s dress code.

Take a moment to get to know your colleagues. Smile and present a firm handshake when you introduce yourself.

5.      Prepare to learn

Your first day is all about learning. You will learn about the company, your role, and that of your team members. So, keep a pen and notepad handy to write down information and don’t forget to ask questions!

6.      Embrace and enjoy the change.

Last but not least, embrace and enjoy the change! Yes, change can be somewhat daunting – but only if you let it. Instead, focus on the positives this new opportunity brings.
