Q and A with Angela Grant, Managing Director, and Day One Recruitment

You have over seven years of experience in legal recruitment– what made you passionate about this area of work?

I was studying law when I began recruiting Lawyers, but I quickly realised that I personally didn’t have that intrinsic passion to practice law. I moved to a Business HR degree and have enjoyed focusing on the people side of the legal industry.

 

How did Day One Recruitment begin?

Before starting Day One, I held some excellent roles in legal recruitment and worked with very smart recruiters. So, after years of learning and mapping the market, I thought I can offer a service that is both client and candidate-centric. Day One Recruitment has gone on to partner with a select range of law firms and companies.

 

What has been your career highlight?

I receive a lot of repeat business, and I feel that this is a large compliment and highlight of my career as a recruiter. We usually start helping clients with a legal role that is very hard to fill, and from there, we can go on to placing HR or Accounts team members. We are very grateful for our repeat business and strong referrals.

 

What is the one thing you have learned and carried with you in all your years in the industry?

There's a lid for every pot! I often think of this proverb as I am a huge optimist and believe that just around the corner, there is a perfect match for my candidates and clients.

 

What does a workday look like for you?

My day starts with an 8 am phone call. This call will usually be with someone who is interviewing that day. I am in charge of school drop for my daughter, Francesca, who is in grade one, so after a quick trip to school, I am back at my desk to start meetings via VC, or I’ll be heading into face-to-face meetings with candidates and clients. I use my afternoons for search, market mapping, and other headhunting tasks. A couple of days per week, I work an after-hours window around 6:30 pm for phone calls and VCs with candidates. Between my work, I fit in as many lunchtime walks or Pilates classes. I find exercising during working hours great for my productivity.

 

What, in your opinion, sets Day One Recruitment apart from the rest?

We don’t have to work with everyone who offers us a preferred supplier agreement. We are cherry-picking what firms and companies that share our values and who provide their employees a point of difference or better than average employee experience.

 

What is the one thing no one knows about you?

I have never broken a bone or had a tooth filling, knock on wood!
