Rebecca Strong - providing exceptional legal recruitment advice and support

With a history of working with teens in an educational and community services setting, Rebecca’s role was to guide and support youth transition to other education, training, and employment opportunities. This role equipped Rebecca for a career in Legal Recruitment, enabling her to build rapport quickly and negotiate under pressure.

Below, Rebecca shares how she got into recruitment; and the journey so far.

Q. You began your career working with teens in an educational and community services setting - how did you transition into recruitment?

I transitioned into recruitment by chance after deciding to finish my significant career working with disengaged youth in the community. Seeking a more corporate environment with flexibility around family life, I was fortunate enough that Angela, the Director of Day One, took a chance on me, recognising the transferable skill set from my previous role would be valuable in recruitment.

Q. What is it about Legal recruitment that excites you?

Legal recruitment is dynamic. No two days are ever the same. The opportunity to meet a diverse range of people within the Legal sector has been a significant learning curve for me. I think my enthusiasm for learning and discovering new things is a driving force for me. Being in a completely new industry is a major aspect that excited me, even though it comes with its challenges.

Q. What does a workday look like for you?

My typical workday would start by 7:00 am, checking and replying to emails while I have my morning coffee and checking my calendar for the day. I am usually running out the door to drop my son at daycare to get back to my desk. If time permits, I will fit in a strength and conditioning or Pilates class at the gym. I then head off to meetings with candidates or clients - involving a mix of VC and face-to-face meetings.

When I am not in meetings, I continuously try and strengthen my talent pool by engaging candidates through networking events, LinkedIn posts, checking in via text/e-mail with new and old candidates, and conducting searches to find great candidates for my clients.

Q. If there is one piece of advice you can give to candidates entering the industry or seeking their next opportunity, what would it be?

Be clear on your motivation for the move and what you want out of a role. Stay true to your personal/professional goals. Be realistic.

Q. What, in your opinion, sets Day One Recruitment apart from the rest?

Candidate care. We communicate regularly. We want it to be a long-term move. So, we care about knowing what makes you tick and want to work to your strengths and goals.

Q. What is the one thing no one knows about you?

Although I grew up in, and was surrounded by, a world-famous surfing community at the southern end of GC, I cannot surf. However, I am a proficient snowboarder and have snowboarded in several European countries and obviously on the Aus fields too. Even though I never saw the snow until I was nearly 19!
